APPLICATION DEADLINE: November 1, 2004 Postdoctoral Individual Advanced Research Opportunities Program (IARO) The Postdoctoral Individual Advanced Research Opportunities Program (IARO) provides fellowships to professionals with terminal degrees and postdoctoral scholars from the United States for individual long-term policy-relevant research in Europe and Eurasia. COUNTRIES: Europe: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia (Former Yugoslav Republic of), Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Eurasia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. NOTE: Funding for Northern Tier countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia) is limited. DESCRIPTION: Grants of two to nine months to professionals with terminal degrees and postdoctoral scholars for policy-relevant research. TECHNICAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must: Be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) of the United States for three consecutive years prior to application; Submit a research proposal on a topic in one of the academic disciplines listed in the application; Hold a PhD or other terminal degree; Submit a complete application package by the deadline; Have fulfilled all requirements from previous IREX grants; and Not be a current IREX employee or consultant or their immediate family members (spouses, parents, children, and siblings) as they are not eligible to compete in any IREX-administered grant programs, either as individuals or as the responsible party representing an institutional applicant. IREX does not discriminate against grant applicants because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or any other protected characteristic as established by US law. GRANT PROVISIONS: Round-trip airfare from the United States to the host country and visa fees. Stipend for living expenses. Housing allowance based on country(ies) and city(ies) of research. FOCUS: Successful applicants will demonstrate how their research makes a substantive contribution to knowledge of the contemporary political, economic, historical, or cultural developments in the region and must demonstrate how such knowledge is relevant to US foreign policy. Scholars in cross-disciplinary and cross-country/regional studies are strongly encouraged to apply.
