CAUCASUS->Consultation of Human Rights Defenders

The Human Rights Education Center (HREC) and the International Service for Human
Rights (ISHR) have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in a: Consultation of
Human Rights Defenders (--Caucasus Region--) on 27-28 September 2004 in Borjomi,
Georgia.

Objectives:

The aim of the consultation will be to establish a Caucasian Network of Human Rights
Defenders to enhance cooperation among human rights NGOs working in the Caucasus
Region.

To introduce participants to the international standards applicable for the
protection of human rights defenders and the use of UN human rights mechanisms.

Participants will also be invited to assess the situation of defenders in the region
in order to develop strategies to improve their protection.

Participants:

The following persons can participate in the selection procedure:

(a) Members of NGO working in Human Rights Protection or Education field in South
Caucasian States (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) and North Caucasus;

(b) Involved in Human Rights Protection or Education Field at least last two years;

(c) Willing to establish cooperation with other Human Rights NGOs working in
Caucasian Region;

(d) Ready to establish a Caucasian Network of Human Rights Defenders;

(e) Fluency in one of two working languages of the Seminar - English or Russian.

Each applicant must present the filled Application Form, CV and a letter from the
nominating NGO. These documents can be presented either in English or Russian
languages. Deadline for presenting the necessary documents is 10th of August 2004.
Applicants will be informed about selection results by 25th of August 2004. A
Waiting List will be established.

Practical Information:

Participation in the Seminar is free of charge. The Organizers will cover all costs
related to the travel and accommodation in Borjomi.

Participants will be provided with free copies of the Compilation of International
and Regional Instruments for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (Russian
version).

The working Languages of the Seminar will be English and Russian. The simultaneous
translation will be provided.
