Dedicated to Building a More Effective United Nations System Dear Friend, Like you, we've got big ideas about the future of our world. Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, believes that "radical reform" is necessary to strengthen the legitimacy of the UN as an effective decision-making body. Mr. Annan's remarks could not be more on target with growing world concern for collective security. The United States plays a key role in world problems everywhere from Iraq to the Congo to Liberia to Bosnia. For this reason, it's essential that the U.S. play a leading role in creating an effective UN that can meet the challenges of today's world. Join our Action E-List and make this happen! The Campaign for United Nations Reform (CUNR) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting political will within America to support a strengthened UN and a more efficient system of international law. As part of this effort to advocate UN support in America, we want to get more people interested and active in UN-related issues. Congressional staffers constantly tell us that their constituents never raise issues about the United Nations. Now we've made it easy for you to voice your opinion on the UN! Join our Action E-List and we'll send you weekly updates about hot-button political issues that relate to the United Nations and a link to quickly send pre-written messages to your representatives and the media (And you can also add your own opinions!). The more letters you send, the faster Congress will realize the importance of cooperating with the UN. So forward this email to all your acquaintances interested in strengthening the UN!!! Together we can make a difference! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit our Legislative Action Center to begin sending messages now! Here are some hot topics you can voice your opinion about today: $87 Billion for Iraq? Frustrated with the fact the Bush Administration waged a unilateral war on Iraq against the will of the rest of the world and now you as an American taxpayer are picking up the check? Stir up attention in the media. Now that the President and his war buddies have devastated the Iraqi infrastructure despite protests by nearly half the American people, they want us to give them $87 billion of our hard-earned money. But unfortunately, we have a duty to pay that money. It's our national penance for putting the Administration in power and giving them war powers. We owe it to the Iraqi people to finish what we've started in Iraq, whether we wanted the war or not. Congress will appropriate the money, but at what cost? We can't continue to give our cowboy administration blank checks when they don't have a specific plan for reconstruction. We're seeing the failures of unilateral war as bombs continue to explode, troops keep dying, and WMDs still haven't been found. Let the media know that you'll support the $87 billion when, and only when, Bush can present a viable plan for transferring reconstruction authority to the United Nations and governing authority to the Iraqi people. Send a letter to the editor of your newspaper about this issue by entering your zip code in the box above or by clicking here. UN Civilian Police Corps The post-conflict situation in Iraq has been plagued with violence, looting, and general lawlessness. The American soldiers in Iraq may be part of the world's best military, but military troops are not trained to apprehend criminals, maintain safety on the streets, or calm a hungry, riot-prone mob. These are jobs for police. House Resolution 1414, A.K.A. the International Rule of Law and Antiterrorism Act, would establish a UN civilian police corps to help reestablish the rule of law, get folks safely to work, and get kids to school. The bill asks for Presidential support in creating a standing force of properly trained, rapidly deployable UN civilian police officers. We've seen the failures of the current UN "civpol" with deployment problems in Kosovo and officer misconduct in Bosnia. H.R. 1414 would alleviate these problems and advance UN peacekeeping abilities. To show your support for a revamped UN Civilian Police Corps, send a message to your congressman by entering your zip code in the action alert box or by clicking here. If you'd like to receive a weekly email with legislative action alerts like these, become a member of our Action E-List by going to this site: http://capwiz.com/cunr/mlm/ Thank you for your support! --Alexandra, Katie, David, Kim, and Jason The Campaign for UN Reform Research Associates (AKA Interns) September 30, 2003 Feel free to send any questions or comments to aholland@cunr.org. |

NATIONAL MODEL AFRICAN UNION HOWARD UNIVERSITY MARCH 3 - 6, 2004 www.moau-au.org You are invited to participate in the second annual National Model African Union Conference to be held at Howard University, Washington, DC., from March 3 to 6, 2004. The Model is essentially a simulation of the proceedings of the African Union. It provides a unique opportunity for university and college students to study the role, structure and performance of the AU in the search for solutions to key economic, social and political-security issues facing the African continent. Through simulation, augmented by briefings at African Embassies in Washington, DC., students gain a better understanding of the multi-various determinants, capabilities and constraints that shape the domestic and foreign policies of African countries as well as the patterns of cooperation and conflict that characterize intra- African diplomacy. Upon registration, you shall receive preparatory material which shall include the Constitutive Act of the African Union; country-profile (provided by the Embassy); the Delegation and Officers Handbook and a Faculty Advisors Handbook. The handbooks include the schedule of events, the agenda and Rules of Procedure. Apart from dealing with a prepared agenda, students will grapple with a contemporary crisis to be revealed at the Model. Your delegation shall be briefed at the Embassy of your selected country in Washington, DC., on March 3, 2004. Country assignments are now being made. Dear delegates- On behalf of the Horace Mann Model United Nations team, I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm invitation to the eighteenth annual Horace Mann Model United Nations Conference (HoMMUNC), the largest single-day high school Model UN conference on the East Coast. HoMMUNC offers high school Model United Nations delegates an opportunity to participate in high-quality, structured debate on a wide variety of international issues. The 2003 conference will take place on Horace Mann's campus in Riverdale, New York, on Saturday, November 15th. Delegates receive extensive preparation packets, including a general background guide and information on the topics of discussion for each committee. HoMMUNC is an excellent opportunity for experienced and novice delegates alike to participate in formal debate. The conference also allows students to work collaboratively, learn about international affairs and current events, and improve their speaking, debating, and writing skills. We are all very excited for this year's conference. HoMMUNC will feature 11 outstanding committees, including traditional UN organs and several specialized agencies. We will also be offering a committee specially-designed for middle school students. Our committees will also have the benefit of an outstanding crisis staff and superior technological capability. To learn more about HoMMUNC or to register for the conference, please visit our website, mun.horacemann.org. If you have any questions regarding any aspect of the conference, please do not hesitate to contact me at SKHM1@aol.com. I look forward to seeing you all here in November! Sincerely, Shaan Hathiramani Secretary-General Horace Mann Model United Nations Team |

MVHSMUN XXI "To Preserve Peace and Make Change" January 10 - 11, 2004 Mission Viejo, California www.mvhsmun.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You are cordially invited to attend the 21st annual Mission Viejo High School Model United Nations Conference. Held from January 10th to the 11th in Mission Viejo, California, this year's Conference will prove to be a gem of an MUN experience. Over thirty committees will be simulated, from United Nations committees and sub-committees to regional organizations and international courts. These committees will be moderated by our thoroughly trained chairpersons, who possess a mastery of the rules of procedure, a precise cognizance over their topics, and adept evaluative abilities. Conference Services will be demonstrating a higher standard of professionalism, as a renovated Computer Lab, a streamlined Office of Public Information, and Committee Chaperones work to ensure quality levels of debate. The tone of this year's Conference will also resound through the theme: "To Preserve Peace and Make Change." In Dr. Ralph Bunche's 1950 Nobel Lecture, "Some Reflections on Peace in Our Time", he declared, "the United Nations exists not merely to preserve the peace but also to make change." Ralph Bunche dedicated himself to international service and the pursuit of global peace. He was a major contributor to the Charter of the United Nations, he negotiated the 1949 Arab-Israeli Armistice, he conceived the first Peacekeeping Operation, and he received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. As delegates reflect upon this theme and ponder the current realities facing the international community, we hope that it will bring a greater sense of unity to the work of the Conference. The Conference will be held on Mission Viejo High School's illustrious campus. The city of Mission Viejo lies deep within the heart of Orange County and provides many touring opportunities. Disneyland and California Adventure are 25 minutes driving distance away from the school. UCLA, USC, and UCI are well within an hour away. And of course, the entire Southern California region is known for its many luxurious beaches, and nearby Laguna Beach is no exception to this rule. The cost for the Conference is a $40 School Registration Fee, due by September 29, 2003, and $25 Delegate Fees, due at a later time. Lunch will be provided on Saturday and delegates may eat at any of the numerous nearby restaurants. Arrangements can be made with hotels only a 10 minute walking distance away from the Mission Viejo High School campus. Further information in regards to Registration, the Conference, or the MVHSMUN Program can be found at www.mvhsmun.org. An Online Registration Form, the school's mailing address, and payment information are all available on the website. If you would like additional information, please e-mail the Upper Secretariat at mvsecretariat@yahoo.com. The entire MUN experience has been enhanced at MVHSMUN. We hope you will join us this January during what will be an unforgettable weekend. Ryan R. Villanueva MVHSMUN Secretary-General |
