Classes in English on the culture, politics and economics of a free and virtuous society. Fellowships are available for students and graduates with good command of English, and include tuition fees, lodging, meals and excursions. Students are responsible for travel expenses. We would like to cordially invite students and young intellectuals interested in the social sciences to take part in the thirteenth Summer School, in Kraków, Poland. The program, which will last from July 3rd to July 20th, 2006, is a meeting of young people from the United States and Central and Eastern Europe, during which participants attend lectures and discussions focused on the theories and practices of democratic systems, responsible citizenship, capitalism, national identity, and many other related questions. The goal of the discussions is to provide a forum in which to compare the two hundred-year-old tradition of American democracy, with the relatively short experience of the young democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. Are the experiences of democracy similar? Is there anything that the two traditions can learn from each other? What should be the model of democracy and capitalism in the 21st century? The program is conducted in English. Among the lecturers are well-known American academics, such as Russel Hittinger (University of Tulsa), Michael Novak (American Enterprise Institute), Fr. Richard Neuhaus (Director of the Institute on Religion and Public Life, editor of First Things), and George Weigel (Director of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C. and contributor to the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times). The lectures are also given by well-known Polish scholars, such as Fr. Maciej Zięba, OP and Professor Ryszard Legutko. John Paul II’s encyclical letter, Centissimus Annus, plays an important role in the discussions, and places a special focus on the role of morality within modern political systems and society. Besides the academic aspect of the Summer School, there are everyday catholic mass and also many social and recreational opportunities, during which the participants are encouraged to meet each other. The limited number of no more than forty students creates a small and intimate environment within which young people can meet others who, like them, actively work and share a common interest in preserving traditional values in the public sphere. Due to the length of the program, the participants are able to get to know each other quite well, which leads to an ease of sharing their own cultural and historical experiences, and generates good discussions. In addition to this, the program includes various evening socials, as well as trips to Częstochowa, Oświęcim, and Wieliczka, as well as a trip to the mountains, which will include a river-rafting trip. The program is free for participants, who are only responsible for their travel expenses to and from Kraków. Lodging and food are included in the program, which takes place in the heart of Kraków.
