International students at The University of Alabama join a community that is culturally, academically, and economically diverse. Our more than 20,000 students come from across the United States and more than 90 foreign countries, and international students represent almost 5 percent of our total student population.Since 1831, The University of Alabama has offered students a high-quality education at an affordable cost, which is in part why U.S. News & World Report's 2004 rankings once again listed UA one of the top 50 public universities in the nation. In addition, UA has a beautiful 1,000-acre campus in Tuscaloosa, an All-America City of 125,000, which offers opportunities for employment and affordable housing, all located only 50 miles from Birmingham.Explore the links below and discover how Alabama is the place where your dreams can grow.

Students interested in admission to The University of Alabama should contact:

International Undergraduate Admissions
Box 870132
Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0132

The initial inquiry should provide information about your educational background and degree interests. Application forms are sent by airmail to all qualified applicants. The catalog that explains each degree program is not mailed on an individual basis, but it is available on this website at the Undergraduate Catalog.

The admission process includes the evaluation of documents, exchange of correspondence, and approval of financial and immigration arrangements. This requires time, and applicants are advised to meet all deadlines stated in the application packet.

The University of Alabama requires that all freshman international students perform above the average; they must have completed their secondary school cycle or must have qualified by examination for admission to a university in their home country. All academic documents submitted to the International Undergraduate Admissions Office for review must be certified, translated copies.

Students wishing to transfer to the University from other accredited institutions should have official, translated transcripts and a detailed syllabus sent to The University of Alabama from that institution so that evaluations of transfer credit may be completed. Such evaluations are made by the registrar of the college the student plans to enter, after the student has been officially admitted.

Non-native speakers of English are encouraged, but not required, to submit to the University the results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) during the application process. The University of Alabama requires a minimum score of 500 paper-based, or 173 computer-based, on the TOEFL or satisfactory completion of The University of Alabama's English Language Institute (ELI) before students may begin an academic program. Students may apply as an ELI Conditional applicant and be approved academically and financially. These students will be required to register full-time in the ELI until they meet the TOEFL requirement or satisfactorily complete the ELI program.

The TOEFL bulletin of information and TOEFL registration forms are normally available at United States embassies and consulates, United States Information Agency (USIA) offices, and foundations and binational centers abroad. Arrangements to take the TOEFL should be made by contacting Test of English as a Foreign Language, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151.

All new international students are given an additional English placement test at the University prior to enrollment. Students whose scores fall below the required level may be required to enroll in and pass specific noncredit English courses. Students transferring from a regionally accredited U.S. institution who are eligible to receive transfer credit for English Composition courses are not required to take the English proficiency placement examination.

Students lacking English proficiency may undertake intensive language study in the University of Alabama English Language Institute (ELI). For more information about the English Language Institute, contact ELI, Box 870250, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0250.

The United States Department of State requires all prospective international students who wish to apply for an F or J visa to demonstrate evidence of ability to pay for tuition and living expenses.

The University of Alabama does not offer specific financial aid to international undergraduate students. Admission will not be granted until the University has approved financial documentation. The application package includes detailed instructions on meeting financial admission requirements.
