Hello - I work in a Graduate Studies Office in Idaho.
We have been informed that incoming international students will have to wait up to 3 months to be issued a Social Security number, while the INS verifies passports, etc. Does anyone have any information on this? Does anyone know how we can help our incoming students that have been awarded assistantships (starting in late August) get their stipends? Any help is much appriciated. |

Yes, this is true. To get SSN, you have to now wait for around 3 months. I have heard that the school can withheld your income for that period and pay you later after you get your SSN. I am not sure about this though. |
