After INS approved my application for status change from B-2 to F-1, I went to apply for a social security number. I was told by the lady there that I need to have a new I-94 for my F-1 status in order for her to approve. Since INS did not issue an I-94 for my status change to F-1, what can I do? Thanks. |

INS was supposed to send you a new I-94, and it is really important that you have it. It proves you are allowed to stay in the US. It comes as a detachable part on a larger piece of paper and looks a bit different from your original I-94, although it has the same number on it. If you are sure you didn't get it then you (or your student advisor or your lawyer) have to contact INS and request a duplicate. In case INS refuses to do it for free you'll need to file a form for a replacement I-94 and pay ($80?) for it.
In any case you DO need it, there's no way around it. It proves your status here. |
