I am a 19 year old female, who has the 10 year Multiple entry US visa. I came here, from India, to the US on a B2 visitor Visa, exactly 2 months ago ( 7th July 2001). However, I would now like to study in the US. My 1-94 is valid till the 7th of January. I would like to know if it is possible to change the status from B2 to F1 without going back to India. Can I begin my college application process? What are the legal formalities I should be aware of? My maternal uncle is a legal resident of the US and I am staying with him and his family. He has agreed to sign the affidavit of support, and sponsor my education . I would be very grateful if you could respond to my questions as I do not know who to approach regarding my problem. I mean...do I have to make a trip BACK to India and apply from there for the f1? Someone HELP!! U can email me at my addy...someone( preferably an Indian citizen who's been there, done that)get back to me.....pleeeeeeease. thanks))) |

The int'l. student advisor at the school you want to apply to will be able to help you with an application for a change of visa classification to F-1. It'll take about a year to get the change of status, and it will not put an F-1 visa in your passport. You'd still have to get that the next time you decided to leave the U.S.
You also won't be able to legally work on or off campus until you've gotten the change of status (at that point you could work up to 20 hours per week on-campus). |

Also, if you start proceedings to get in to a school within 90 days of arrival to USA, INS may NOT agree to change your status from visiting visa to student visa. Hopefully, the international student advisor will inform you about every possibilities. |
