I have applied for change of status from B-2 to F-1(vermont center). 15 of August will be five month that I have applied. In case I can not get my approval till that time, I can not use of my assistant ship and I have to pay the tuition (because I am Ph.D student) Can I do any thing to speed up this process to get the answer on time? -thank you. |

In short, no, there's nothing you can do. Vermont says that it's processing change of status request anyhere from 120 to 180 days. Your school could check on the status of the application but, as we say, a watched pot never boils. All they will do is say IF it's been processed not WHEN it will be processed.
Did you get receipt that they recieved your I-539 form. If you didn't, have the school check if they even got the it. If you did get the reciept and havent heard anything in 180 days, have the school follow up. Good luck. |

Thank you for your consideration.
I have recived a notice that they have mentioned this type of cases takes 120-180 days. But as I checked the vermont processing time, they did not have any progress on the May. Why they are too slow in this respect? Thanks |

The INS is slow because Americans want strong border and visa enforcement but don't want to pay for it. The INS is dangerously understaffed and has the lowest job satisfaction among its employees than any other institution in the US government. And since non-immigrants can't vote, it's almost an impossible system to fix.
I apologize on behalf of my government. Once again, good luck Lila. |

JJJJ,
Yes. You're considered to be in F-1 status once you've filed your I-539 so you can change schools. |

I don't know of a webpage with transfer guidelines. I'll try to put one up on dreamschools.com. The process is simple but it's often not done correctly.
1. If your in good and academic standing you're allowed to transfer to another school. 2. The new school will give you a transfer form for you to have your old school DSO to fill out. It only asks if you were in good academic and financial standing. 3. Your new school will issue you a transfer I-20. They will keep the school copy and send it to the INS within 15 days of your transfer. You don't need to inform the INS of your transfer. Good luck. |
