I have been in the US for 8 years, first in a J visa for six months and then on an F1 visa ever since. I attended college, got a year of OPT under my F1 after that, and the went back to grad school. I will finish my phd next year and want to stay in the US. What are my options? Can i apply for OPT again (because it is a different program of study)? Or should I just try to get an H visa from an employer? Any other way (apart from getting married!?)

I believe you can't get a second OPT unless you've been outside the country or in a different status for more than 6 months since your last OPT.
Yes, you can find an employer to sponsor you for an H-1. The other thing your employer may want to do is sponsor you directly for a Green Card. It may be not too difficult when you get your phd. There are several types of Green Cards, you may want to look into it. http://usvisa.com/green_card.htm |
